7 Day Trendy Diet: The Keto Diet
Exploring Trendy Diets One Week At A Time
Hello everyone, for the last quarter of the year I am trying a new diet each week for 7 days to test my emotional and psychological reaction to different dieting lifestyles. I understand the average diet does not take physical effects for 3 weeks to 90 days, but as a foodie, I want to explore how different people eat food on a day to day basis.
My second mission is to test the “wellness” placebo effect. The illusion that changing their diet made a person’s emotional well-being change. Some people report that as they change their diet their focus and motivation has changed. I have yet to find that after losing weight in the past. For week one I tried the gluten-free diet.
Keto Diet: A keto diet is well known for being a low carb diet, where the body produces ketones in the liver to be used as energy. It’s referred to as many different names — ketogenic diet, low carb diet, low carb high fat (LCHF), etc. When you eat something high in carbs, your body will produce glucose and insulin.
Personally I kept all of my carbohydrates below 50g per day here is my break down of carb intake each day.
Sunday- 18g of Carbs
Monday- 22g of Carbs
Tuesday-19g of Carbs
Wednesday- 27 of Carbs
Thursday-42g of Carbs
Friday- 20g of Carbs
Saturday- 27g of Carbs
What were some challenges to being Keto that you experienced?
These were some effects I experienced, some people call it the “keto flu” I personally just didn’t enjoy it.
Dry Mouth |Constant Hydration ( I definitely drank more than my average 8 bottles of water each day).
Inconsistent Sleep ( I already struggle with this so it was worst)
Confused Perception of Appetite
You go on and off between craving carbs period.
Smoother Skin
Enhanced libido
Enhanced energy towards the end of the week
Did you cheat?
Once, at a ramen shop, but shockingly I did not undo my ketosis.
Were you able to workout?
They say you are not supposed to workout on Keto, but I did anyways and worked out Sunday through Saturday ( took a break thursday) I was more cardio heavy.
Why I tried it: Everyone is doing it, so I had to add this to my list.
How much did this diet cost on my weekly grocery budget? I already had a lot of these items in my house so Keto cost me exactly 40.01.
Is Ketosis good for you?
There are mixed review on whether the Keto diet or going through Ketosis is good for you. As someone whos doing a blog on this I can not say it is or isn’t but with all diets, be careful in moderation.
Did I reach Ketosis?
Yes I actually did, I was no ton a full blown level of ketosis, but I bought a keto strip and it turned pink within the 7 day window which means that my blood was pumping out .15 mg/dl of ketones in my blood which is a sign that the low carb keto diet did take effect.
Did I lose weight from Ketosis?
During this week I lost 4 lbs totalling 11 lbs since I started blogging. Its hard to tell whether it was strictly the Keto diet that helped me lost 4lbs in 7 days however the diet definitely helped.
Would I do keto again?
Given the amount of bacon I consumed in the past week, I think I need to see a doctor before I would do this again. The diet was much easier to maintain given the ease of access to healthy fats, veggies and meat, however theres something about abandoning a food group ( like I did with meat) that did not sit right with me and the Keto Flu was odd. I would do the diet again, but next time I want to talk to a doctor. My meal plans were relatively balanced and I got more skilled at cooking beef and salmon ( my two main sources of protein/fat) since I do not like avocado. I also cooked a lot of cruiciferous and green vegetables during the time and got friendly with cheese despite my lactose intolerance. So combined with my disgust for avocado and intolerance for cheese, I would have to check this diet out in a diff angle despite getting results from it. No need to gas myself up after all.
